Purpose: History has become multimedia. By creating a digital collection of photographs relevant to Burke County, the project will be helping history to come alive.
Project Goal: To create a high-quality digital collection of photographs from Burke County, in order: 1) to provide one-stop access utilizing new technologies such as CDs, DVDs, and the Internet and 2) to preserve these for future generations.
Organization: The library is keenly aware of the benefits of cooperation with other organizations in the community in order to achieve our goals for the Picture Burke project. Representatives of the Burke County Genealogical Society, Burke County Historical Society, Burke County Public Library and Historic Burke Foundation participated in the organizational process.
Funding: Funding has been provided by EZ-LSTA NC ECHO Grant, Burke County Genealogical Society, Burke County Historical Society, Historic Burke Foundation, Burke County Public Library, Alex Mull Foundation and Grace Episcopal Foundation.
Selection of Materials: The following criteria was considered when deciding what materials to digitize:
· Mission of organizations involved – materials selected should fit with the mission statements of all organizations participating in the project.
· Copyright – items are considered to be in the public domain prior to 1923; therefore, the selection of photographs are prior to 1923, or used by obtaining permission from copyright holders. · Documentation – items must be adequately captioned.
